Britton and IMC deliver RAN diesel outboard powered support boats

In support of industry partner, Britton Maritime Systems and their range of high performance ship’s boats, IMC’s continues to support the Australian defence sector with specialist design and engineering capability.

A key enabler of modern maritime patrol and intercept capability, ship’s sea boats are required to provide high performance reliably and safely in the most demanding conditions.  To this end, IMC was contracted by Britton Maritime Systems to provide a suite of design engineering to enable their existing 7.6m rigid hull inflatable designs to take full advantage of the latest diesel outboard engine technology.

Discussing the recent project, BMS Chief Executive Officer Steve Britton said: “IMC and BMS have worked closely together on design modifications of the first ever Diesel Outboard Support Boats for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The design is based on the original BMS diesel inboard engine vessel with sterndrives, which are currently in service with the Australian Border Force on their eight Cape Class Patrol Boats.  The RAN now has six of the new diesel outboard powered 7.6m Support Boats developed for the latest Cape Class Patrol Boats, Cape Fourcroy and Cape Inscription.

IMC’s Engineering Director, Peter Bavich, explained some of the specific activities the Fremantle-based independent consulting firm completed. “To enable the design to be repowered using the new diesel outboard technology, our team redesigned the aluminium hull structure to accommodate the new propulsion arrangement while ensuring full compliance with stringent classification society DNV GL and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) safety requirements” he said.

The project highlights the versatility that IMC’s broad range of capability and experience delivers. Well known for its work with large steel hulled offshore, research, fishing and naval vessels, this project proved that it is equally adept with much smaller and faster aluminium boats.
