International Maritime Consultants (IMC) has been appointed by Pilbara Marine (a fully owned subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group) (“Fortescue”)) to oversee the construction of Fortescue’s new tug fleet, to be built at the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam.
IMC’s scope will include ensuring technical compliance, build quality and suitability for the tug fleet’s Australian operations, as well as contract technical specification review and the provision of construction specialists to oversee all statutory and Australian standards compliance.
Pilbara Marine will commence towage operations at Port Hedland, Western Australia from 2018 with the fleet of six Robert Allen designed ART 85-32W class tugs.
The Rotor®Tug design features two azimuth thrusters forward and one aft delivering 85 tonnes bollard pullover both the bow and the stern, and 65% from amidships. The Rotor®Tug system delivers manoeuvrability, braking, and engine and winch redundancy benefits while the ‘W’ notation refers to an increased beam providing additional stability for escort operations.
A permanent team of IMC personnel will be based at the Damen shipyard for the duration of the build with additional specialists used as required.
The new Fortescue tugs will be berthed at a dedicated tug harbour to be constructed behind the Fortescue Anderson Point loading berths in Port Hedland. IMC has also assisted Fortescue with elements of the tug harbour and its associated entrance channel design.
IMC managing director, Justin McPherson, commented “Having had involvement in the design, construction and ongoing of technical support of numerous commercial vessels operating on the Australian coast enables IMC to offer its clients highly effective and efficient vessel acquisition outcomes. We look forward to ensuring the new Fortescue tug fleet are ready to work from day one and for many years to come.”
