Skipsteknisk AS of Norway and International Maritime Consultants (IMC) of Fremantle, Australia have entered into a teaming agreement to offer the Skipsteknisk range of hydrographic oceanographic research vessel designs to the Commonwealth of Australia under program SEA 2400 Phase 1 Hydrographic Data Collection Capability.
The exclusive arrangement will bring together Skipsteknisk’s (www.skipsteknisk.no) global research vessel portfolio of in-service designs with IMC’s (www.imcau.com.au) wealth of Australian vessel compliance experience and vessel construction support. On the basis of both naval architecture consultancies independent position, the Skipsteknisk IMC team will make their reference design/s available to program bidders on a non-exclusive basis, ensuring the Commonwealth has maximum flexibility in its choice of supplier and build location.
As the world’s leading independent research vessel designer Skipsteknisk has been delivering sophisticated oceanographic vessel designs for more than 25 years bringing to SEA 2400 unparalleled expertise and experience in platform considerations, including onboard and offboard hydrographic and oceanographic systems, hull borne noise mitigation, vessel motions and designing for through-life value and performance.

Recent Skipsteknisk designs to go into service include the 75m fishery and oceanographic research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen constructed at Spanish shipyard Astilleros Gondan for the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) as part of the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The vessel is jointly operated by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the University of Bergen (UIB). The company also designed the 95m Peruvian Navy oceanographic research vessel, RV B.A.P Carrasco, constructed at Freire Shipyard in Vigo, Spain.

This experience will ensure Skipsteknisk’s technology is transferred seamlessly into the Australian context while providing a national repository for the design data throughout the life of the vessel.
